In Gan Zayit for over two years now, we have been collecting bread tags… and this has now turned into a class Mitzvot to support Aussie Bread Tags for Wheelchairs. One of our class programs this term is on Tikun Olam, Mitzvot, sharing ‘good deeds’ with others. We have been having lots of discussions about helping and caring for others and what we can do, and how others feel when someone shares a Mitzvah with them.

 Gemma – I love helping people

Evie – When someone falls down you can help them

Dari – It’s very kind doing a Mitzvah

Ester – It’s when you help someone, because they can’t do it by themselves

Noa – teachers can help you

Aiden – I like to help Ollie

Scotty – It’s when you help people

Gabriel – It’s nice to sing someone a song

Levi – It’s a Mitzvah to help people

Ezra – telling people they are beautiful

Aussie Bread Tags is a foundation that buys wheelchairs for disadvantaged people, mainly in South Africa. This is done by collecting bread tags, which are not recyclable in our current bins, and turned into bowls and pens which are then sold. The money is then donated to buy the wheelchairs (as well as some prosthetics). Some of these products are even sold in Country Road!

So far this foundation has collected more than 5 tonnes of plastic bread tags in Australia, which have then been sent to SA for recycling into the homewares by Transmutation – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. In early in 2020, they funded their 800th wheelchair!

There are multiple collection points around Melbourne, and towards the end of this term, we will donate our precious collection.
