Chag Shavuot Sameach!

Shavuot (meaning ‘weeks’) was known as one of the pilgrimage festivals, on which people brought their spring offering (‘bikkurim’) to Beit HaMikdash in Yerushalayim. Eating dairy food is also favoured during Shavuot. This week Hebrew sessions were all about fruit, vegetables and especially dairy!

Across the School, Shavuot was celebrated on Thursday with craft activities centred around receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. The much-loved Shavuot play was enjoyed by ELC to Year 5 students and in the Senior School, Years 6-8 students competed in a masterchef-esque dairy bake-off.

For ELC children, discussions centred around where the ‘chalav’ (milk) comes from and the different dairy products we can eat. A favourite was glida (ice-cream)! All the children had a chance to ’milk’ our ‘parah’ (‘cow’) Nehama, while drinking ‘chalav’ and singing about the land of milk and honey ‘eretz zavat chalav u’ dvash’.
