Junior School students are in school uniform, on the oval at a Welcome to Country smoking ceremony. They are walking through smoke in a ceremony led by William Pepper for the Boonwurrong Land and Sea Council.

A meaningful Welcome to Country

Our students were welcomed onto country on Monday in a smoking ceremony at each campus, led by Boonwurrong elder Uncle William Pepper. This ceremony usually happens on the first day of school for the year but was postponed due to the heat last Monday. The smoking ceremony fire included cherry ballart leaves, representing the next generation, wattle for knowledge, and gum leaves for diversity.

The ceremony helps us begin the year with purpose and acknowledge the thousands of years of learning that have already taken place on these lands. The smoke cleanses and acts as a connection between fire, air and earth. Thank you to Uncle William and his family for the meaningful ritual.
