Nitzan Social Expo
Our Year 9 Nitzan students shared their social action projects with their families at the Social Action Expo on Wednesday night. Throughout last term, students explored big concepts such as homelessness, food insecurity, gender equality, human rights, and sustainability. The Expo was their chance to share their artistic responses to the social issue that means the most to them.
The Senior School was buzzing with activity as the crowd of parents moved from exhibition room to exhibition room commenting on the projects on display.
Among the exhibits, families saw art in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine made in collaboration with Chinese dissident artist Badiucao; student documentaries on depression and on the recent overturning of Roe vs. Wade; an anti-corruption animation and high fashion made from fast fashion packaging. They explored the social media campaign ‘Dispayrity’ about the gender pay gap, and heard spoken word on vulnerability and homelessness made with the guidance of the poet Ren Alessandra.
Students emphasised how Nitzan had helped them see the humanity that we all share. They stressed the importance of opening up about feelings and talking about issues, and how Nitzan had taught them perseverance.
The new mural outside the MPR was also unveiled, with students explaining that it references the beauty of nature and the threat of environmental instability.
As Fred Kok said, “Nitzan is the most transformative program I’ve seen in my 45 years of teaching.”
Kol HaKavod to our students and to Jayne Wise and all Nitzan staff!
