Year 10 have the courage to care
Last week the Courage to Care program came to speak to our year level. We learnt about the difference between an upstander, bystander and perpetrator and the impacts each of them have on others. It was also truly incredible to hear firsthand from a Holocaust survivor’s son, Mark, who shared on behalf of his Mother. He shared her experiences during the Holocaust which really put into perspective the profound impact being an upstander can have on someone’s life and the courage it takes to stand up for what we believe is right.
We were shown various ways to be an upstander based on different situations and engaged in different scenarios where we discussed and displayed the actions we could take. I think courage to care was an empowering reminder of the power our voices can all hold in the community, something which is certainly needed as young Jewish teenagers in the diaspora.
